Subject Selection – Heathmont College 2021

Year 7 and 8

In Year 7 we teach the Victorian Curriculum. The curriculum is the common set of knowledge and skills required by students for life-long learning, social development and active and informed citizenship.

The Victorian Curriculum incorporates the Australian Curriculum and reflects Victorian priorities and standards.

Subjects taught at Year 7 and 8 are a combination of year-long and semester-long subjects. Students choose one language. To aid transition in Year 7 and develop connectedness, English and Humanities are taught by the same teacher in ACTION. This allows students to be well known by their teachers and to enrich discipline specific learning by activating complementary knowledge and skills. The Year 7 ACTION program also features an emphasis on guided inquiry, including an inter-disciplinary Deep Learning project each semester.

Year 9 and 10

The Heathmont Model  provides greater choice in learning for students in Years 9 and 10 by allowing them to do more of what they enjoy, specialise in deep knowledge of an area, or engage with a broader set of learning opportunities. The courses are designed to appeal to a variety of interests, explore big ideas and specific content, and promote student connection to areas of study.

With The Heathmont Model, Years 9 and 10 students have the freedom to indicate preferences for courses across the required breadth of learning areas, as well as additional courses in areas of interest.

Students can also apply to study a VCE or VET subject in Year 10.

Senior Programs

In Years 11 and 12 we teach the VCE, VCAL and Head Start. These certificates provide diverse pathways to further study or training at university or TAFE and to employment.

Each VCE subject is made up of four semester-long units. Units 1 and 2 are usually studied in Year 11 and Units 3 and 4 are usually studied in Year 12. Units 3 and 4 are taken as a sequence.

VCAL can be undertaken in either Year 11 or Year 12 and is made up of four yearlong subjects (Literacy, Numeracy, Work Related Skills and Personal Development), a TAFE study and a work placement in an apprenticeship or traineeship.

Head Start is usually comprised of an *unscored VCE in 3 subject (English, General Maths and either Business Management, Health and Human Development or Food Studies), a TAFE study and an apprenticeship or traineeship.

*Please note: Seek more clarification from the Pathways Leader.
