14 — CONTENTS Sport Given our strong commitment to the ‘healthy body – healthy mind’ principle, our students participate in an extensive sport education program including: HOUSE AND INTERSCHOOL COMPETITION Everyone is involved in the school House swimming, athletics and cross-country carnivals but students can opt into competition in sports including diving, badminton, basketball, netball, soccer, volleyball, tennis, table-tennis, cricket, football, golf and hockey. House competition fosters great camaraderie and the sense of belonging that comes with expressing team spirit. At Heathmont College participation is as valued as winning, so it’s risk free and fun. It’s why so many get involved in our sport, debating, public speaking or dramacompetitions. Thedevelopmentof sportsmanship, discipline, communication, leadership and social skills aren’t a mere by-product, they’re core. PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT Physical, social and emotional development is the focus of this study domain. It complements our Positive Education program in its aim of building the resilience, self-esteem, character strengths and growth mindset of students. This impacts each student’s interactions with their peers, family and community members. OUTDOOR EDUCATION The opportunity to learn in the wide open spaces of the outdoors is available to our VCE students. Activities including cross-country and downhill skiing, high and low ropes courses, rock climbing, canoeing, bushwalking and cycling provide further scope for building confidence, resourcefulness, responsibility and environmental awareness. Visual and Performing Arts Creative endeavour plays a central role in the educational and cultural life of Heathmont College. It fosters expression, self-discipline, collaboration and social development. Our expert teachers challenge students at all levels to think, imagine, design, create and appreciate using a wide range of media, materials and technologies. There’s something for everyonewith offerings including music, drama, dance, painting, sculpture, ceramics, visual communication, photography and media. To attend any of our performing arts events or art exhibitions is to see the product of our students’ imagination and work ethic; their passion and flair. COLLEGE PRODUCTION A musical is staged each year and all students are encouraged to participate. This is an amazing opportunity for students and parents to become actively engaged in a wider school initiative through Props, Make Up, Stagehand or fundraising. INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC PROGRAM The Instrumental Music Program at Heathmont College provides all students with the opportunity to discover a love of music. We believe that music enables students to build relationships with others, achieve academic excellence and prepares them to be ready for learning. At Heathmont College, students have the opportunity to play a wide range of musical instruments. Affordable lessons are available with quality teachers in all concert band instruments such as flute, clarinet, saxophone, trombone and trumpet, piano, violin as well as guitar, bass guitar and voice. All students who learn an instrument also have the chance to be part of the many College Ensembles, such as Concert Band, Stage Band, Woodwind Ensemble, Brass Ensemble, Choirs and Rock Bands. Students in these ensembles rehearse and perform regularly at College functions and at community events. Students at Heathmont College who excel in music, have the opportunity to study their chosen instrument through to VCE. This also includes the opportunity to fast track their studies in Year 10, by completing Year 11 Music Performance.
