IDAHOBIT Day
May 19 all-day

Attention Heathmont College Community!

IDAHOBIT day is just around the corner on this Saturday (May 17th), however we as a school will be celebrating the day on the following 19th (Monday). But what is IDAHOBIT? Here is some background info:

What is IDAHOBIT Day?

IDAHOBIT stands for the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia and Transphobia, and it’s held every year on May 17. It’s a day to support LGBTQIA+ people (that includes lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, intersex, asexual, and others) and to stand up against discrimination and bullying.

A Bit of History IDAHOBIT

Started in 2005 and is now marked in over 130 countries around the world. The date (May 17) was chosen because that’s the day in 1990 when the World Health Organization officially said that being gay is not a mental illness. This was a huge moment for LGBTQIA+ rights.

Why It Matters

Many people in Australia and around the world face exclusion, bullying, or worse just because of who they are or who they love. That’s why IDAHOBIT is so much more than just a day.

It’s a chance to:

–        Show support for LGBTQIA+ classmates, teachers, and families.

–        Learn about inclusion and acceptance.

–        Speak up against unfair treatment or stereotypes.

IDAHOBIT is a reminder that everyone deserves to feel safe, seen, and respected—no matter their gender identity or who they’re attracted to.

What’s Happening at Heathmont

Now that we know a bit more about the day, what are we doing as a school to support it?

Keep your eyes peeled this Monday, especially up around the canteen area for some activities such as face painting, LGBTQIA+ flag quizzes, and more! Also make sure to wear a splash of rainbow and make your mark on supporting the LGBTQIA+ community by putting yourself on the pledge board.

Thanks everyone!
