Students will study and evaluate the health of our local waterway, the Dandenong Creek. Students will learn about the impact of climate change on freshwater ecology while completing a realistic scientific investigation including practical sampling of creek water and wildlife from a local site.
In class time, students will participate in water testing and sampling, working to plan, conduct and present their own findings, developing their knowledge of scientific concepts and their scientific inquiry skills.
Please see Compass event for further details.
All Year 10 students completing the Core Humanities subject this semester will participate in a whole-day Geography fieldtrip to Half Moon Beach (at Cape Schanck) and Middle Brighton Beach to gather fieldwork data for their Coasts unit. The Common Assessment Task for this unit will be a fieldwork report that will be completed using the data students collect on this day.
The ability to collect data on the day of the fieldtrip is one of the key skills assessed in this unit.
Students will travel by chartered coach from Heathmont College and will be accompanied by staff at all times. Students must bring with them a hat, sunscreen and sunglasses for sun protection. Students must also bring a clip board, pencil case with pens and grey led pencils and a drink bottle. Students will be required to use their mobile phone, or a digital camera, to take photos of geographical features as part of the field data collection. Students are highly encouraged to bring their own prepared lunch and snacks. There is a kiosk at the Brighton Beach site but school staff cannot guarantee that it will be open, or that the food will be affordable. Students will arrive back at school by bus at approximately 3pm for dismissal. Students will not be permitted to swim or wade in the water on this field trip.
Year 10 OES class will be collecting data on the Ringwood Lake environment, including water, soil, air quality and biodiversity levels. Students will be asked to meet at Ringwood Station by 8.30am and we will then walk to Ringwood Lake altogether. Students will return to Heathmont College for period 3.
