The year 12 HHD students are learning about targets of health promotion in Australia, in particular road safety and how it relates to the Ottawa Charter and the Sustainable Development Goals. The Road to Zero program we are attending is a special program designed specifically for HHD students studying Unit 3 AOS 2 and Unit 4 AOS 2 and aligns with the VCAA study design. This program (run on the two dates we are attending only) includes guest speakers and an opportunity for students to ask questions, alongside the regular immersion activities.

The Intersection City Walk takes students on a walk around the city during which they learn about homelessness, drug and alcohol addiction and evaluate the effectiveness of government programs aimed at addressing these issues. They will also learn about Indigenous perspectives on health and wellbeing and have an opportunity to learn about potential reasons for the variations in health status between a variety of population groups.

  • concepts of health and wellbeing (U3 AOS1)
  • factors influencing health status and burden of disease (U3 AOS1)
  • variations in health status between population groups (U3 AOS 1)
  • social sustainability (U4 AOS1)
  • the UN prerequisites for health (U3 AOS1)
  • features of effective aid programs (U4 AOS2)
  • taking social action (U4 AOS2)
  • the relationships between the Sustainable Development Goals (U3 AOS2)

The Empathy Workshop is a practical problem-solving workshop that allows students to challenge their prejudices and improve their communication skills. This will help the students understand the concepts of equity and social justice (U3 AOS1) and the effect of discrimination on health status (U4 AOS1)
The ‘The Intersection’ workshops will be used to discuss the above concepts and help students relate what they learn about national and global health and human development to their own community.

Students will be meeting at Ringwood Station at 8.50am and will then be dismissed Ringwood station at 3pm.
