Heathmont College offers a rigorous academic program for students with an emphasis on relationships with staff to achieve the best from students. We pride ourselves on obtaining the best results for every child and we value the ideals of an international education.

We are one of the few Government school with its own English Language Centre. This allows early assimilation for students into the school and introduces them to teachers who will also teach them in their mainstream classes. In this program, students will spend two terms learning English as well as engaging in a variety of orientation programs around Melbourne. Australian cultural expectations, customs and information about the local area and the school will be incorporated into the orientation program.

Students are provided with an International Student Handbook which contains valuable information about the program and how the College operates. They are provided with important documents in their own language to help them understand their responsibilities and their rights.

Once students have satisfactorily completed this program (normally of 20 weeks) they are supported in mainstream classes and also through afterschool homework clubs.

While our students are supported with English as an Additional Language studies it is their attendance at mainstream classes that benefit the College community. Many of our international students stay with local homestay families, allowing them to experience Australian culture and community whilst also enhancing their English language skills.

Our pastoral care model is based on a Learning Group program. Students have an opportunity to mix with their peers who are not in their timetabled classes and become well known by staff members.

Pre-departure

Students and families are provided with a welcome package containing essential documents which outline the school policies, homestay policy, cost of books and uniform, and information about living in Australia. These documents are designed to make the transition as smooth as possible. It allows communication to take place between students and the International Student Coordinator prior to arrival in Australia.

Airport Pickup

All students who require airport pick up will be me by the International Student Coordinator or delegate and taken to their homestay.

Homestay

The College recognises the importance of ensuring the best possible accommodation and welfare arrangements for International Students. Homestay providers are selected carefully and undergo an application process. All homestays are monitored closely and visited regularly by the International Student Coordinator.

We understand that students living and studying away from home require special support and our homestay families deliver this to the students.

A Homestay Responsibility Agreement is signed by both the homestay provider and the student to ensure that each party fulfils their obligations.

All International students are provided with the International Student Coordinator’s mobile number and email address. Parents and students are able to contact the International Student Coordinator as needed.

Translated Documents

Students are provided with a translated copy of all key documents.

English Language Centre

All students will undergo a 20 week English Language prior to immersion in mainstream classes. This is offered onsite at the College. This provides many advantages for student – they can remain with the same homestay family, they are immediately welcomed in to the College community and we are able to ensure that a rigorous program is delivered.

All students and families at the College have access to Compass, the Learning Management System used at Heathmont College. Parents and guardians are provided with a login to be able to view student progress and communicate with staff.
